Mp3 player problems?

I have a rca opal m4001 mp3 player and when I plug it up on the computer it says usb connected but everytime I go to sync something is says connect device. And when it does say device connected these little x's come up beside the song i'm trying to put on my mp3 player. Can someone please help?
