How can i "dumb this down"? like make it less intellectual?

ok so the way i understand this, is that it is say that, trench warfare happened during a revolution were one side had better guns and bombs, and the other side not so much. like for instance say u went to a gun fight with a knife, your knife against a gun isn't going to work so you have to find a way to beat the person with said gun. so the defense had the better guns, and the offence had the knife -in my ogy- so in world war 1 they offence deiced they were going to dig holes in the ground to get away from the gun fire to better attack the defense. and by front they mean were the fighting is going on, and they used barbed wire so if the other side deiced to attacked that it would stop some of them from getting into the trench. . and the area between the trenches was were there was no holes in the ground so if you went out there. chances are your going to get shot. i hoped this help, if i didn't confused you
