Does anyone remember this book??

For English GCSE we read a book, set during WWII I think, about a young man who runs away and hides on Salisbury Plain. At the same time a black cat, a puma or something, escaped from a zoo and the storyline ran on these two themes. We enver finished it so I don't know what happened after that. Does anyone have any idea what this book could have been? Thanks.
