What is the UK payment known as "gyro"?

More specifically on the English series Shameless, Frank is often said to be waiting for his "gyro." As an American, I get the gist. It's his regular government handout, but I'm always curious to known just what it is and how an actual Brit spells the word. Is it slang for the Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)?
